| To provide a basis for formulating policies for the animal fats industry, the current trade situation and competitiveness of China′s animal fats in the international market were analyzed. Using the SITC Rev.4 classification codes from National Research database, a static and dynamic trade competitiveness matrix for measuring exports of China′s animal fats was constructed from the perspectives of comparative advantage, competitive advantage, and complementary advantage. The trade status and competitiveness of six categories of products, namely cod liver oil, fish oils, pork and poultry fats, bovine and ovine fats, lanolin, and miscellaneous animal fats were further examined. The results showed that China′s animal fats presented a trend of narrowing trade deficit, with bovine and ovine fats and miscellaneous animal fats being the main sources of this deficit. At the static competitiveness level: in 2023, China′s lanolin had extremely strong net export revealed comparative advantage and very strong competitive advantage, however, the international market share of all six categories of animal fats was relatively low. In 2023, China had a strong complementary advantage in lanolin trade with the United States and Japan. At the dynamic competitiveness level: China′s pork and poultry fats, as well as bovine and ovine fats, demonstrated dynamic revealed comparative advantage and dynamic net export revealed comparative advantage; lanolin showed dynamic net export revealed comparative advantage and dynamic competitive advantage; miscellaneous animal fats possessed dynamic competitive advantage and dynamic international market share advantage.China had dynamic complementary advantages in lanolin trade with both the United States and Japan. Specifically, the dynamic trade complementarity between China and the United States in cod liver oil, pork and poultry fats, bovine and ovine fats, and miscellaneous animal fats showed an upward trend; similarly, the dynamic trade complementarity between China and Japan in pork and poultry fats and miscellaneous animal fats also presented an upward trend.Based on these findings, policy recommendations are put forward, including enhancing the core competitiveness of the animal fats industry, accelerating the cultivation of new productive forces in the oil and fat industry, improving safety precautions for animal fats products, and strengthening trade cooperation in animal fats and vegetable oils with countries along the ″ Belt and Road″. |
