Abstract:
      The synthesis of high purity behenic acid sugar alcohol monoesters with methanesulfonic acid as green catalyst was studied. Behenic acid was prepared from the fatty acid mixture obtained from saponification of Compritol 888 ATO with further purification through crystallizations. Ultra-long chain fatty acid sugar alcohol monoesters were synthesized under mild conditions with methanesulfonic acid as catalyst, behenic acid as an acyl representative and xylitol as sugar alcohol. The results showed that under the conditions of molar ratio of behenic acid to xylitol 1∶?10, 1.5 mmol of methanesulfonic acid fixing on 0.5 mmol of aluminum oxide and reacting at 60?℃ for 24 h, the conversion of the reaction was 30% and the selectivity was 97%. The results indicated that the reaction conditions were also applicable to other sugar alcohols, such as ethylene glycol, glycerol, erythritol, pentaerythritol, arabitol and sorbitol.
