Abstract: |
As a class of special fatty acids with a furan moiety in the central part, furan fatty acids (F-acids) are mainly found in microorganisms, plants and fish. Recent studies have showed that F-acids can effectively scavenge reactive oxygen free radicals, and alleviate oxidative stress-induced damage. However, the relationships of one metabolite of F-acids, 3-carboxy-4-methyl-5-propyl-2-furanpropanoic acid (CMPF), with diabetes and chronic kidney disease remain controversial. Further investigation on the structure and physiological function of F-acids is a critical direction for the study of F-acids. The research progress on the source, synthesis and physiological functions of furan fatty acids were summarized to provide reference for the further research on F-acids and their products. |
